Pada bulan Juni 2013 lalu, Kota tua Ampenan Mataram resmi masuk menjadi salah satu dari 43 kota dalam jaringan Kota Pusaka Indonesia (JKPI). Kota ini dahulunya pernah menjadi salah satu pusat kota di Lombok, kini ia telah menjadi sebuah kecamatan di Mataram. Terutama sejak dibangunnya pelabuhan Ampenan oleh Belanda pada tahun 1924.
